I love technology and education. Maybe you like knitting. Cool. My thing is educational technology.
The Mighty Assumption
We are, of course, entering into this with an assumption. Technology, when used wisely, is a tremendous valuable learning tool. If the administration team in your school does not share this assumption, successful integration will be very, very difficult. The more teachers who think technology will work for them, the better. However, even if teachers don’t think there is anything for them in technology, we can help them.
Know who you got…
Forgive the poor grammar. The first step in integration is to thoroughly survey the faculty. Who are they? What is their technology demographic? What is the past history and successes with technology? What do they want? What do they define as “using technology”? All of these questions are critically important. It’s not enough to send out surveys and emails. Look for a 90% response rate. I’ve found going to faculty meetings, and as much face to face contact as possible helpful. You should have a very clear idea of who you are working with.
This is not an one time thing. Make sure you have on-going metrics to see who is using what for technology. Maybe number of login’s.. perhaps there is a way to see how many people are using emails.
What’s success, anyway?
Much like planning normal lessons in class, begin with the end. When this is done, what will be different? Make sure you are very clear about your criteria for success.
we are looking for 50% more faculty using email
40% more student use of technology during instruction time
an overall test-score increase in specific content area
30% more teachers are using powerpoint
discussion-based evidence
student test scores
parental surveys
No matter the outcome, make sure you have something you can use.
For part 3; meet the teachers, dealing with reluctance, share success, encourage and invite.
