Great for schools - but think about it first
Blogging is a great way to easily "get" online.
Teachers can post homework assignments, class announcements, and writing prompts
Students can write blogs for different writing assignments. My favorite blogging activity? Ask students to blog as a literary character from a class book.
I used think of my site as a blog, but I've since changed my focus. I want my site to be a portfolio and resource. So anyone who wants to learn about educational technology or games in education can come here and walk away with clear understanding "how it works". I also want the site to serve as my online portfolio - so I can save my stories and perhaps other people will learn from them.

Why "think about it first"? Because blogging is good for one way communication but not as good for full conversations (forums are great for that). Another issue for teachers: the time it takes to monitor and evaluate student blogs. If the blogs have comments, it's even harder to find the time to monitor the blogs.
